Causes of Ingrown Toenails

Here is a quick summary of the causes of ingrown toenails – I wrote about this previously on this post – Ingrown Toenails but realized that I didn’t really speak to what causes ingrown toenails.

Here is that list:

  1.  Tight-fitting shoes or high heels cause the toes to be compressed together and pressures the nail to grow abnormally.
  2. Improper trimming of toenails can cause the corners of the nail to dig into the skin. Nails should be trimmed straight across, not rounded.
  3. Disorders such as fungal infections of the nail can cause a thickened or widened toenail to develop.
  4. Either an acute injury near the nail or anything that causes the nail to be damaged repetitively (such as playing soccer) can also cause an ingrown nail
  5. If a member of your family has an ingrown toenail, then you are more likely to develop one, too (inherited). Some people’s nails are normally more rounded than others, which increases the chance of developing ingrown nails.

Resources:

Kills the fungus that causes fungal nails.

  • Prevents fungus from growing on the skin and around the nails.
  • Podiatrists often recommend using around nails daily to prevent recurrence.
  • If you have an ingrown toenail – NO SELF SURGERY!  See your doctor or a specialist as there is treatment available for ingrown toenails.
