			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We&#8217;ve talked about hygiene for some time now, lately a few of the questions I&#8217;m asked are about hygiene and pre-teens and teens.</p>
<p>Hopefully once your son (or daughter) is a teen &#8211; they WILL WANT TO make sure they don&#8217;t stink.  After all a smelly kid will not be attractive or pleasant to anyone &#8212; parents included.</p>
<p>Rather than rewrite what I&#8217;ve already written &#8211; as it applies to adults as well as teens and pre-teens, here are a few sites that have done a good job on presenting the material.</p>
<p>Heidi Katz of Los Angeles, Calif., never wanted to become the &#8220;because I said so&#8221; kind of parent. In the past few years, when her son, Max, 11, ignored her pleas for him to use good grooming skills, Katz resisted the temptation to be demanding.</p>
<p>&#8220;My child has always kept himself pretty clean, although I&#8217;ve met with certainly a lot of resistance lately,&#8221; Katz says. &#8220;Take a shower. I don&#8217;t want to. Cut your fingernails. I don&#8217;t want to. Brush your teeth. I don&#8217;t want to.&#8221;</p>
<p>Katz found material for her son to read about good grooming habits. She took him to the store to find guy-friendly as opposed to unisex grooming products. Now he takes more frequent showers, using body wash and shampoo.</p>
<p>Controlling body odor is not easy, and more boys are starting to develop and become involved in sports at a younger age. Max stays active with his skateboarding, rollerblading and soccer games.  &#8221;He is getting to the point now where he sweats,&#8221; Katz says. &#8220;He did not used to sweat. He is starting to develop those glands and that capability.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Did you know that most people that lose weight tend to regain most, if not all of it within a year?  It&#8217;s true &#8211; several studies have gone on to prove that 80% of people on diets gain their weight back.</p>
<p>How can you be part of the 20% that DOES NOT gain it back?</p>
<p><strong>Getting Started TODAY</strong></p>
<p>You cannot leave weight loss for January 1, New Years Resolutions, after the summer picnic, or any other event.  Weight loss (and waist management) needs to start today.</p>
<p>It is easy.</p>
<p>When I had gone onto lose 100lbs, I ate EVERYTHING &#8211; including the forbidden fruit, chips.  But I made use of portion control.  Go for the summer picnic, or the bbq &#8211; but control what you&#8217;re eating.</p>
<p>In addition to portion control, and avoiding high fat and sugary foods &#8211; <a href="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sb3NlLXdlaWdodC1mZWVsLWdyZWF0LmNvbS9nZXQtbW92aW5nLWV4ZXJjaXNl" target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>exercise</a>.  It doesn&#8217;t have to be hard.  I didn&#8217;t join any gym or workout like crazy.</p>
<p>I started with walking and riding my <a href="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sb3NlLXdlaWdodC1mZWVsLWdyZWF0LmNvbS9nZXQtbW92aW5nLWV4ZXJjaXNl" target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>exercise</a> bicycle.  10 minutes per day, daily.</p>
<p>Soon 10 minutes wasn&#8217;t enough.  So I did 20 minutes, then 30 minutes until finally I could do 60 minutes per day without a second thought (and without getting tired).</p>
<p>By starting slowly and building up, you not only make <a href="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sb3NlLXdlaWdodC1mZWVsLWdyZWF0LmNvbS9nZXQtbW92aW5nLWV4ZXJjaXNl" target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>exercise</a> enjoyable but something you turn into a habit &#8211; and once you have a good habit that has formed (hopefully) it&#8217;s not something that you will break.</p>
<p>As you watch what you eat, and <a href="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sb3NlLXdlaWdodC1mZWVsLWdyZWF0LmNvbS9nZXQtbW92aW5nLWV4ZXJjaXNl" target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>exercise</a> &#8211; you will lose weight and as you lose weight you won&#8217;t feel like going back to old habits.</p>

<li>Number 9 &#8211; Gliding &#8211; same reasons as above.  You expect that the plane will keep your 400lb body aloft?  Yah, sure.</li>
<li>Number 8  &#8211; Skydiving - you expect that tiny parachute to keep up 400lbs?!?!  Seriously, most schools will not accept you if you&#8217;re over 220lbs.</li>
<li>Number 7 &#8211; Cave Exploring &#8211; hey, there are some really tight spaces in caves; and unless you want to become part of the cave &#8211; forget about it.  Seriously.</li>
<li>Number 6 &#8211; Mountain Climbing &#8211; do you really think that those ropes will hold you up?</li>
<li>Number 5 &#8211; Paragliding &#8211; ok, ok, ok ANY sport or hobby that requires you to be tethered to anything to keep you aloft, don&#8217;t think about it.  This includes stuff like Wingsuit Flying.</li>
<li>Number 4 &#8211; Shark Diving &#8211; you&#8217;d make a tasty morsel for the sharks. </li>
<li>Number 3 &#8211; Paint Ball &#8211; only because we make easy targets.</li>
<li>Number 2 &#8211; Kayaking &#8211; ummm&#8230; I don&#8217;t think they make kayaks that big.</li>
<li>Number 1 &#8211; Horse Riding</li>
</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I started to lose weight, I ate three meals per day AND I snacked in between meals.  Snacks were never high-calorie foods, but low-calorie AND low-fat foods &#8211; typically it would be things like baby carrotts, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers or other vegetables.  I&#8217;d also add fruit to the mix and preferred apples and grapes (watch grapes as they are high in natural sugars).</p>
<p>But I didn&#8217;t stop there &#8211; I would have snack crackers, but checked the labels to ensure that they were not high in fat or salt.</p>
<p>Other snack ideas are nuts - preferably un-salted, pretzels (in limited quantities &#8211; NOT the whole bag).</p>
<p>I also made sure that I drank plenty of water to keep myself hydrated.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While there are statistics all over the place about the high cost of obesity, and the damage it causes the health care system &#8211; whether that be in Canada, the US or any other country one thing is certain that as the economic times have changed which has forced many families to take on more &#8211; such as both parents working or parents having to take on 2nd jobs and leaving kids behind to fend for themselves obesity has increased.</p>
<p>Parents that have to work, naturally will have less time to spend with their kids &#8211; as a result those kids may spend more time on the couch instead of outside playing.  In fact when you look at the playground, who do you see?  Generally kids where one parent is at home &#8211; not very often will you see kids by themselves.</p>
<p>While that is quite a generalization as there are skinny kids that may not be outside playing, are they necessarily healthy?  Just because you&#8217;re skinny doesn&#8217;t mean healthy.</p>
<p>I came across an excellent article about Obesity in the US on the CDC website &#8211; <a href="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5jZGMuZ292L29iZXNpdHkvZGF0YS90cmVuZHMuaHRtbA==">http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html</a>.  They provide an animated map of the US that shows obesity rates from 1985 to 2008.  The 1985 map is primarily white, with some states in the &lt; 10% or 10% &#8211; 14% categories.  Fast forward to 2008 and it&#8217;s anywhere from 20% to as high as OVER 30% with only one state in the 15% &#8211; 19% range (Colorado).</p>
<p>The article goes on to show the rate of obesity among minorities &#8211; white, non Hispanic, Hispanic and black non Hispanic.  It&#8217;s clear from the graphs that obesity is in epidemic proportions in many ethnic communities.</p>
<p>The final image that they provide is the prevalance of obesity by county and right below that the number of cases of diabetes.  It becomes clear when you view both of these that there is a high correlation between obesity and diabetes.</p>
<p>The fact is that we need to do more to lose weight &#8211; and not just an empty promise to ourselves that we&#8217;ll start &#8220;tomorrow&#8221;.</p>

<li>Get off a stop early &amp; walk.</li>
<li>Go for a half-hour walk instead of watching TV.</li>
<li>Make a Saturday morning walk a group habit.</li>
<li>Walk briskly in the mall.</li>
<li>Park farther from destination and walk.</li>
<li>Walk instead of sitting around.</li>
<li>Take your dog on longer walks.</li>
<li>Drink lots of water.</li>
<li>Walk the beach instead of sunbathing.</li>
<li>Walk to a co-worker&#8217;s desk instead of emailing or calling them.</li>
<li>When walking, go up the hills instead of around them.</li>
</ul>
<p>Simple steps (excue the pun) to get you up and out walking!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-734" title="h1n1-humanswineflu" src="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/h1n1-humanswineflu.png" alt="h1n1-humanswineflu" width="300" height="231" />The H1N1 flu virus has been in the news, a lot.  There are many scary stories about people having taken the shot and having reacted badly, and there are many sites out there capitalizing on the H1N1 by &#8220;selling&#8221; what should be public information or information that is already freely available &#8211; aaaah, the capitalist economy.</p>
<p>The fact is that you can find much of the information you need about the H1N1 virus (or human swine flu) on the web through REPUTED sources &#8211; like the CDC (US Center for Disease Control) or your local disease control center or health unit.  Ask your doctor about the benefits and risks of taking the shot.</p>
<p>There are also a lot of sites out there that are trying to scare you into NOT taking the shot.</p>
<p>Ultimately YOU need to decide whether you want the shot or not.  You need to evaluate the risks versus the benefits and make an informed decision for you and your family.</p>
<p>Have I taken the shot?  Yes, I have.  I was quite apprehensive about it but in the end decided to take it.  This is also the first time I&#8217;ve ever taken a seasonal flu shot.  Don&#8217;t let my decision to take the shot affect your decision.</p>
<p>If you know someone that has H1N1 or someone in your family has H1N1 you should speak to your doctor about what precautions to take &#8211; in most cases they will be common sense things &#8211; like trying to isolate yourself, to washing hands and not touching your face with your hands if they are not clean.</p>

<p>Losing weight is more about making lifestyle changes &#8211; changes that will benefit you in the long run.  You start gradually and work your way towards a healthy lifestyle.</p>
<p>If you eat fast food 3, 4 or 5 times a week start by cutting down to once or twice per week, then once or twice every two weeks then finally once or twice per month and eventually cut it out entirely or limit it to a few times a year.</p>
<p>In order to boost your weight loss you need to become active.</p>
<p>I was reading an excellent article on a website called Exploratorium.  I&#8217;ve reprinted parts of it below and have included a link to the article and site:</p>
<blockquote><p>During the course of an average game, some players can lose as much as 5 to 8 pounds. This loss is mostly water, so players are concerned about making sure they keep enough fluids in their bodies. Goalies, who make it to the bench much less often than other players (who have one-minute shifts), keep a water bottle on top of their goal. Goalies can lose as much weight as a forward or defenseman.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>Some players lose more than just water. Many players will lose weight during the course of the season. In an extreme case, Sharks Captain Todd Gill went from 180 pounds to 165 pounds (82 to 74 kg) over the course of the 1996 season.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>Millard told us that it was typical for a player to lose 6 or 7 pounds (3 kg) in fat and lean body mass during the course of the season.</p></blockquote>

<p>While these are extreme cases, it does go to show that playing sports will help you lose weight.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not all playing sports will do &#8211; it will help you tone your body and help tighten your skin so as you lose weight your skin stays tight and doesn&#8217;t sag.</p>
<p>Sports or regular <a href="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sb3NlLXdlaWdodC1mZWVsLWdyZWF0LmNvbS9nZXQtbW92aW5nLWV4ZXJjaXNl" target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>exercise</a> can do much for us: improves mental health, helps prevent depression, helps to promote or maintain positive self-esteem, and can even augment an individual&#8217;s sex appeal, frequent and regular physical <a href="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sb3NlLXdlaWdodC1mZWVsLWdyZWF0LmNvbS9nZXQtbW92aW5nLWV4ZXJjaXNl" target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>exercise</a> boosts the immune system.</p>

<p><strong>How To Reduce Your Risk of Contracting H1N1 Human Swine Flu Virus</strong></p>

<li>Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.</li>
<li>Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.</li>
<li>Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.</li>
<li>Try to avoid close contact with sick people.</li>
<li>If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.</li>

In our society, it&#8217;s easier and easier to eat high fat and low nutrient food, which makes it easier to gain weight. There are countless methods you should combine if you want to lose weight in a healthy way.</p>
<p>The obvious way, of course, is to eat less. Or you can try to improve your diet and make better food choices.</p>
<p>Boosting metabolism is also an obvious way to lose weight, and many people do this through <a href="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sb3NlLXdlaWdodC1mZWVsLWdyZWF0LmNvbS9nZXQtbW92aW5nLWV4ZXJjaXNl" target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>exercise</a>. Your metabolism is, basically, the rate at which your body uses the energy in food. Metabolism is individual with different people naturally having different metabolic rates.</p>

<p>Another way of boosting metabolism which may at first seem counter productive is to eat more often. If you eat too few calories in a day, rather than boosting your metabolism, you are actually lowering it.</p>
<p>Your body will start learning to survive on fewer calories, and no longer need as many calories. This is sometimes called starvation mode. This mode is a lowered metabolic rate your body would slip down to if you had to survive a famine. Our bodies don’t work as well in starvation mode. This is why it is important to eat breakfast each day.</p>
<p>Certain foods can help in boosting metabolism. Sugary foods do not help (these actually slow metabolism rather than speed it up), but research shows some spicy foods can accelerate weight loss by boosting metabolism. Eating small, tasty, and healthy meals several times a day is the best approach when trying to lose weight.</p>
<p>Sleep and stress also affect your efforts at boosting metabolism. Stress slows your metabolism and releases steroids called cortisol into your body that cause your metabolism to slow, besides the fact that many dieters often want to eat more and unhealthy food when they become stressed.</p>
<p>Sleep is helpful in boosting metabolism. Eight or nine hours a night is best for most people. If you <a href="http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5sb3NlLXdlaWdodC1mZWVsLWdyZWF0LmNvbS9nZXQtbW92aW5nLWV4ZXJjaXNl" target='_blank' rel='nofollow'>exercise</a> on a regular basis your metabolism will actually function better. Boosting metabolism is important because as people get older, metabolism inevitably slows down.</p>
<p>By boosting metabolism, you&#8217;ll keep your body fit and at optimum energy levels. So go out! Take a walk; actually take one three times a week for at least thirty minutes.</p>

<p>Hi &#8211; great site!  I have learned a lot reading your posts.  Keep it up.  I have a question for you.  I am in my early 40&#8217;s and am really trying hard to lose weight but am not having any luck.  I must admit that I&#8217;m not very active but have been trying to get more active.  Can you give me some tips on how I can take care of my weight problem?</p>

<p>Anna &#8211; Like you, I am in my 40&#8217;s and it is difficult for me to get active but to be frank, you have to get active if you want to lose weight.  Cutting back on calories will certainly help but you need to do something in order to help accellerate your weight loss.  It doesn&#8217;t have to be a regimented program.</p>
<p>For example my son takes karate classes every Friday and I normally attend to watch him and help him.  I&#8217;ve learned a few of the moves and practice at home with him.  While they may seem very basic, for a big guy running the moves for 30-60 minutes gives me a workout!</p>
<p>What else can you do?</p>
<ol>
<li>Walk the house.  If you don&#8217;t enjoy walking outside, or are self-conscious about your weight you can walk around the house.  My son has allergies so we walk the house, and the stairs.</li>
<li>Housework.  The best.  Vacuum the floors and carpets.  Do the bed, dust &#8211; whatever you need to do just do it.  Housework will keep you active AND keep your house clean and spotless!</li>
<li>If you work &#8211; go out for a walk or at minimum get up off your chair and stretch or head to the water cooler and fill up a glass or pitcher with water.  I used to go out for a walk at lunch for 15-30 minutes every day.  It kept my mind focused and alert.</li>
</ol>
<p>You also need to cut back calories &#8211; look at the &#8220;invisible&#8221; calories.  I call them invisible becuase we consume them without even realizing that we have.  Several items fall into this category:</p>
<ul>
<li>Granola bars that are coated in chocolate</li>
<li>High sugar cereals like Froot Loops and such</li>
<li>Bread (try buying thin sliced bread)</li>
<li>Soda pop (yes, we consume it without even thinking)</li>
<li>Snack crackers &#8211; some of them are VERY high in fat and calories!  You need to read labels</li>
<li>Cookies, cakes and other baked goodies &#8212; need I say more?</li>
<li>Juices &#8211; most juices are very high in calories because of the added sugars.  Choose juices that are NOT FROM CONCENTRATE.  You are really limited as to flavors, and normally you can only find orange juice that falls into this category.  Even then there is a lot of natural sugar so I dilute the orange juice by adding half juice and half water OR half soda water &#8211; like Perrier water.  I prefer the Perrier water because if gives the orange juice a bubbly, almost carbonated taste.</li>
</ul>
