Do Not Go To The Gym And Lose Weight

I am telling you YES – you CAN lose weight withough going to the gym.

First off you need to avoid certain types of foods. You know, the empty calories. Chips, chips, chocolate, candy, chips etc., Even when you look at healthier items such as cereals (yes, cereal makes a great snack in addition to a superb breakfast food) or crackers – read the nutrition label to ensure you’re not having more fat than you would have otherwise – read my post http://www.lose-weight-feel-great.com/2007/02/21/when-are-diet-foods-not-diet-foods/ (going back to 2007) for more information about “diet” foods and choosing wisely by reading the nutrition labels and ingredients.

Avoid sweetened drinks – like pop, soda, cola, fruit juices, energy drinks and yes alcohol.  Stick to 2% or skim milk and water.  The other thing you need to do is either stop or significantly limit eating out.  If you will only have a salad then fine, but there are a lot of hidden fats in restaurant meals – usually in things like the trimmings, you know the rich and delicious sauces and marinades that are poured on virtually everything on the menu.

Now I lied a bit, I did go to the gym.  I had a membership for about 5 years!  I went maybe a dozen times.

The gym was VERY busy, and everyone there had the perfect body.  Not very conducive to losing weight.

So I started exercising at home – my son was a few months old and walking so we made it a game of tag he’d chase me or was I chasing him?  He had fun and I got exercise.  Walking was a BIG part of my weight loss.  I’d walk all the time.  I’d park several blocks from work and walk to the office.  I went out for walks at lunch time and in the evenings at home.

In addition to walking I rode a stationary cycle as well as a regular bicycle.

I’ve always hesitated buying the latest piece of exercise equipment that is seen on TV because more often than not it will end up sitting in a corner somewhere, in the garage or finally in the garage sale (or garbage).  You don’t need to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on equipment.

The exercise bicycle I purchased cost me all of $49.00 (it was on sale and the regular price was $200.00).  I used it faithfully for years and finally sold it and actually got MORE for it than I had paid!

If you intend to buy equipment, try a treadmill or exercise bicycle – but really all you need are a good pair of walking shoes an MP3 or iPod loaded with songs or whatever you want to listen to and start walking. 

I purchased a treadmill last year for just under $300.00 – again it was a model that was being discontinued and originally sold for over $1,000.00

While you can lose weight by going to the gym regularly the idea is to help build your muscle and tone your body.

How else can you lose weight around the house?  Here are a few way:

  • Wash the dishes
  • Do the laundry (not just putting it in the washing machine – but the whole 9-yards)
  • Clean the washrooms
  • Do the beds
  • Clean the room
  • Declutter the garage or storage
  • Go through boxes of stuff and donate what you don’t need/use anymore
  • Wash the car(s)
  • Yardwork
  • Vaccuming

Just a few things that you can do today to keep active without spending any money going to the gym.
